Sequal to game 08-01-2009
The signal was poor but it was enough to summon a cab.
Black picked his way carefully back across the debris that cluttered the warehouse floor.
A closer inspection showed that a vast amount of the debris was broken concrete.
Drake, in his eagerness to collect metal had even gone to the extent of ripping the reinforcing bar out of the building's concrete oversite!
Angel, having secured an agreement from Drake to come for Christmas dinner was coaxing the diminutive man towards the door with all the compassionate urgency of a father leading his children quickly away from some horrific scene.
Black followed cautiously.
Outside the sky was now completely dark, the low cloud obscuring any view of the moon or stars and under-lit by the orange glow of the city lights.
Angel pulled the collar of his coat up against the cold but Drake didn't seem to notice it, he walked alongside is friend with the gait of a man who has come to the last of his energy and moves only through sheer force of will.
A group of kids had gathered around the big motorbike parked outside the derelict looking old warehouse. They were older kids, in their mid to late teens, sporting blue or possibly indigo gang colours, it was difficult to tell in the gloom. Only one in three street lights seemed to work in this part of town.
As the short human and what appeared to be a child stepped out of the doorway the young gangers nudged one another. Very little was said among them but from their body language their intent was obvious to Angel.
The human stopped and sighed, putting a hand on Drake's shoulder to halt the oblivious man.
"Was it always going to be like this?" Curren/Angel thought to himself, not really wanting to get involved in any sort of fracas with these lads.
The door behind him creaked as it was pushed shut and the tall figure of Caliburn Black stepped up.
Whereas Angel was dressed in his everyday clothes and a long thick coat to protect him from the elements and Drake by his very purpose appeared as a small child, Black had an all together different look to him.
His long black coat over full body armour and the unusual visor over his eyes gave the gangers no doubt as to amount of grief any unfavourable encounter with these men could cause them. This guy was either a corporate agent or a runner. Either way - not worth the hassle.
"Problem?" Black asked Angel loud enough for the gangers to hear.
The lads began to back away from the bike and one, a dwarf, shrugged saying in response, "Nice bike, man!"
Black gave the dwarf a nod of acknowledgement as he and his two companions stepped onto the street.
The taxi arrived moments later. Black followed behind.
Despite Angel's efforts at healing Drake's wounds the small man was still suffering and had fallen to sleep on the couch within minutes of arriving at Black's apartment.
The building itself was a rather run down eight storey block with a boarded up shop on the first floor.
Black's apartment was on the second floor, what used to be the store owner's place.
The apartment was sparsely furnished and bore more resemblance to a hotel room than a residence. Even so, most of the household items were in good order and fairly up to date. The place was also secure.
Black had turned the local news on when they had arrived, something he always did. He was looking out for more reports on specific families within Oakland being targeted by the Japanese.
The trid projector filled one corner of the room with it's three dimensional holo-image of the 'Oakland Today' news desk with a pretty young newsreader describing the last minute Christmas rush in the Delevere Mall.
Whilst making a cup of tea for them both, Black reiterated the general outline of the Doc-Wagon job to Angel. Both men were quintessentially English and had not lost their predilection for tea rather than the American preference for coffee, soy or synthi-caff products.
Such a luxury as real tea was very expensive, but Black would not forgo the small indulgence.
The elf directed Angel in the direction of the coffee table. Somewhere amongst the flotsam of small drone components was a sheet of paper with Black's initial perceptions and thoughts regarding the Doc-Wagon job.

Black's sheet of hand written notes
Security Breach at Doc-Wagon
(medical emergencies being picked up by persons unknown claiming to be from Doc-Wagon. Real paramedics arriving minutes after patient has been collected)
Point of Interest - all meta humans - no humans. Meta humans are from all varieties but with very few elves.
Initial Thoughts -
1. Some sort of anti-metahuman group? An expensive and potentially risky operation just to snag random meta-types.
2. Rival firm? If so then why the DW equipment. Rivals would want you to know who they are, plus med bills will be prepaid to DW so the rival would end up making nothing from the transaction.
3. Organ leggers? Possibly. Still risky if the real DW should turn up - but one of the better options. Relies on being in the right place at the right time - a little too random for serious leggers.
4. Emergency call response tome for DW even in Oakland would be a matter of minutes, ten at the outside. If this is someone randomly waiting to pick up emergency calls to DW then to be able to pick up the victim and be gone before the real DW turns up than they would have to be at least twice as fast. Which means that they would need double the coverage. That's a lot of vehicles not easy to hide. Unless they are operating in a small area and only responding to calls from that area.
How many victims? Which areas are the snatches occurring?
5. How often does this occur??
6. Where would someone locally get hold of convincing DW equipment and paraphernalia?? Cold the vehicle spray jobs have been done locally??
7. Has this occurred in other DW contracted cities??
8. What if there is only one fake DW team? This would mean that they would again have to rely on pure luck to come across an injury within five minutes of them. Are they waiting around the corner and the victim being deliberately injured? Targeted?? Seems to be a lot of that going on at the moment? Who are the kidnap victims?? Is there a connection between them??
9. What is the nature of the medical emergency? Has the fake team actually acted as paramedics, strapping people up prior to extraction?? If so that would indicate a degree of trauma training.
10. Witnesses? Who? What did they see??
11. Were there any DW vehicles off site for 'maintenance'? any irregularities in vehicle logs. Someone is intercepting the DW signals. Could it be an inside job? Who took the 'call' at DW for the victims? Was it the same person?
Any other points?....

'Cheers' Dave said as he sipped tentatively on the hot drink placed the cup on the table and sat down to look at the findings that had been so far ascertained.
'It all looks pretty good, just a few elaborations to some of them.'
'How about being able to pin down where all of these incidents took place?' he said to Black. 'Obviously there have been other occurances of this nature that haven't been reported, but we may be able to get some sort of pattern from their operations so far?'
'Also I think the witnesses, preferably friends and relations rather than off the street witnesses should be located. It would be a lot better to have a witness with an emotional connection to the missing, we'll want to make sure that the team or organisation doesn't hear too much about us snooping around.' Curren rubs his eyes, the long day was starting to catch up on him.
'Furthermore, how easy it it to be able to intercept radio transmissions? Surely Doc Wagon would have highly encrypted tech to stop this from happening?' Dave juggled the information quickly; as he tried to get a lead.
'We must be dealing with a proffesional unit, no surprise there.' he surmised as he leant back on the sofa with his hands behind his neck closing his eyes.
'I have a few questions for you mate.' Dave said as he opened his eyes to regard Black.
'Who gave you this job, and what are you being paid for it? And the second question is, have you thought about what we're having for Christmas Dinner tomorrow? As its getting close to the event and I'd hate to let down Frank.'
'To be honest we can take the day off tomorrow, I'll need to make sure everything went well for our soup kitchens and handouts for the homeless back in Seattle tonight. We can discuss the rest of the job on Boxing Day.'
Dave leaned forward and grabbed the mug of tea and took a deep gulp of it.
'But the truth is, we have plenty of time to sort out an effective plan and counter most eventualities.' he concluded.

Brent Fuller sat back in his 42nd Floor office, turning upon his office chair he looked out across the Downtown Oakland skyline, his gaze finally settling upon the Old Oakland Tribune Tower.
Fuller examined the reply from the Shadowbox, the matrix contact 'Necron' had contacted, agreed and replied, matrix meets were always more risky in 'Fullers' opinion but infinitely safer and more expedient.
The face of 'Emanuel Sanderson' appeared within a window, Docwagon Oaklands Resource Acquisition Specialist or in-house fixer, smiled.
"We're good to go" he said
"Not a moment too soon" replied Fuller, the Divisional Controller has got my balls in an almighty sling"
"Nice image" smiled Sanderson in an all too familiar way
Fuller dismissed the window, the last thing he needed was Emanual hitting on him, he popped some ibruprofen.

Necron thank you for the speedy response, further information for clarity:
* All of the patients were in fact female Homo sapiens robustus, all within their third Trimester of pregnancy.
So far 3 women have been kidnapped, each had activated their transponders due to pregnancy related issues, each had a DW contract paid for by their employers.
No DW vehicles have been unaccounted for.
Each of the kidnappings occured in various districts of the flats.
I can provide you with further details upon a physical meeting and confirmation of agreement.
I cannot stress enough is that time is of the essence, as DocWagons wish is that these people are returned safe and well.
Mr Johnson

Mr Johnson,
Likewise your prompt reply is appreciated.
I agree that a physical meet is now prudent.
Tomorrow is Christmas Day. Therefore I suggest a meeting in the early hours of Boxing Day morning.
There is a pier on Lakeside Drive just north of the old yachting club on Lake Merritt. The pier is opposite the end of Madison Street.
Lat: 37:48:18N
Lon: 122:15:43W
06:30hrs.
On the pier is an old restaurant, I hear they make a fine breakfast.
I shall bring my team, yours of course are welcome.
Merry Christmas
Necron

Brent Fuller groaned as his comm received the encrypted redirection.
06.30 gods, did these people not sleep, no silly question, these people were nightcreepers, nocturnal.
His wife came into the living room from the kitchen
"You okay honey?"
"Yeah, early start Boxing Day" he replied
She grimaced but said nothing, handing him his glass of Merlot

'You didn't answer my question Blackie, how much are you getting paid for this?' Curren repeats. 'And I take it I'll be getting paid for my services?'
The englishman drained the rest of his tea in a gulp and stood up to stretch his legs.
'Naturally the money that I make will be distributed back into the charities that I work with.' he said.

A good point there by Curren. Just what is the deal with Doc Wagon?
Black's current pitch is middle of the road - he's a realist and appreaciates that he's not big-time at the moment (not got the reputaion for that) but also that we aren't fresh faced rookies either.
However part of the deal would have been a platinum contract with themselves on successful completion of the job, number to be determined at physical meet.

Also I would like to highlight the fact, and get us all into the habit of actually investigating and finding the background of the people in question we are dealing with. As well as the job itself.
So, on meeting the Johnson. It is a very good idea to find out his background and relationship to the job etc.
There's no such thing as too little investigation, as long as we get the knowledge we can plan for most eventualities
What we could do is make an A4 page with all of these points on them (and the points I may have missed!), and fill in the details on each of the jobs as we do them. (Thats if we actually survive this first job!) Sort of like a risk assesment report. So it's:
1, Background of the job. What will we be paid? Whereabouts will we receive payment. Specific bank accounts made for the sole purpose of money made through a run etc.
2, Known Personalities giving the job, names, employment, demeanor to us. Background etc.
3, Threats/Enemies/Corps/Competition and other dangers that may compromise or endanger the operation.
4, People affected by the job, victims, people in the area of the operation, long term effects to people etc. (Legwork)
5, Why/Is is this job viable? Is it achievable? How trustworthy is the source of the job?
6, What equipment is required? Comms units, explosives, surveilance and most importantly Counter Forensic Equipment (Shell catchers for weapons and gloves on the most basic level)
7, Geographical data on the field of operations. Staking out the planned area of operations until a good picture of it is made.
8, Use of force required, if any?
9, Use of the S/R team as effectively as possible. Specialisations etc. The job need not involve all the team at the same place. (Backup, driver etc.)
10, The drawing up of the plan.
11, At least three alternative escape plans if the job turns sour.
12, Professionalism: 99% of combat does not require lethal force. Deaths equal a loss of reputation, and will result ultimately in more opponents and enemies to the team. Unfortunately killing is required in some instances but should only be the final option.
13, Safe houses established, escape routes plotted, and the destruction or disposal of weapons etc. Cover stories establised to match each of the team.
14. On completion of the job a good debrief made to establish lessons learnt, shortfalls and thoughts for future operations. Also getting paid succesfully! See note 1.
15. Failure of a job: The effective disassociation between all of the S/R team. Cutting all ties with the botched job and escaping the scene. See entries 11 and 14 above.
What do you all think? And could someone maybe make up the table for this for us to use? It will make a job easier to organise and execute effectively with a better outcome maybe......

Moving on.........................
Necron snarled at the huge black monolith, his thoughts running to both offensive and stealth options.
The glossy representation was drawing an unusual amount of resentment from the Matrix persona.
Behind the Necron, Black knew that this was irrational and reigned in the Necron's destructive thoughts.
Heeding the calming influence of his physical self, Necron took a step away from the effigy and applied his own rationale. Yes, credsticks are notoriously difficult to crack and full of IC, but this is a certified credstick, which is basically electronic money. It is possible to apply a security code to your certified credstick, usually a six character passcode. But these credsticks would be open, as Mr Fuller would not have known who they were going to. Therefore the passcode would be set at the default six zeros.
Necron moved around the column until he came to a portcullis. A huge robot security guard in titanium plated armour stood in attendance adjacent to the dark entrance.
As the evil looking figure approached the robot merely pointed to an alcove.
Inside was the touch screen into which the passcode should be entered.
Mentally preparing to defend himself, necron entered six zeros and virtually pressed return.

Multi-tasking
Cal had heard mentioned somewhere that men were rubbish at multi-tasking.
He neither cared nor could be bothered to respond to the statement that was quite obviously made by a woman who lacked the ability to devote her full attention to the 'task at hand'!
Black had no problems being able to multi-task.
As he approached the the huge tower like representation of the credstick, he accumulated the information acquired from this morning's meeting.
He arranged it so that all the relevant information was there and easy to read before saving the file and sending it to the remote deck in his office.
Mysteriously the Necron's voice sounded from the trideo player instructing Dave to have a look at the monitor.
Intrigued Angel wandered out into the small hallway and into the second bedroom which quite obviously played the role of office and workshop for his elven colleague.
The micro-thin screen was already on:-

The Doc-Wagon Job
Requirement
To investigate the disappearance of three Doc-Wagon Clients from the Oakland, CFS.
Identify culprits (if any) and facilitate a rescue/recovery of clients.
Employer
Doc-Wagon direct hire. More specifically Brent Fuller, Manager for Doc-Wagon Oakland Special Investigations Department.
Reason For Hire
Doc-Wagon fear their reputation being tarnished. Corporate Image is everything.
If DW goes to the authorities then this will inevitably become public knowledge long before any investigation into the disappearances can be completed. Keeping the job 'in the shadows' ultimately has a better chance of maintaining secrecy.
Fees
The deal is Y28000 (Y7000 per person) to investigate and locate missing clients and identify any culprits if clients are subjects of kidnapping. A further Y20000 (Y5000 per person) to engage any 'hostiles' at the direction of Doc-Wagon representative should the 'hostiles' meet the perceived threat level agreed during the meeting with Mr Fuller.
Fuller has agreed to further negotiations on pay should the threat level be higher than initially perceived.
An up front payment of 10% of the total fee (Y4800 (Y1200 per person)) has been issued on certified credsticks.
Known Data
ï‚· During a routine sweep of news, police and authority databases DW identified TWO missing persons reports on their clients. The analyst upon further investigation found that the signal from the clients' emergency bracelets had been lost. DW explains that this can happen only if:-
1. Bracelet turned off. However DW recieves a disconnect signal when bracelets are deactivated. They have recieved no such signal.
2. Client is no longer in a 'coverage' area. DW reports that the signal was lost in both cases within high coverage areas.
3. Deliberate blocking of signal and/or tampering with bracelet.
ï‚· Further checks of the Oakland system revealed another case where signal inexplicably lost.
ï‚· 3 clients, all women, all orcs and all in the last few weeks of pregnancy are missing.
ï‚· Disappearances have occurred in various locations across Oakland 'Flats'.
ï‚· The frequency of the signal losses are:-
1. The first occurred 6 weeks ago.
2. The second occurred 3 weeks later (2 weeks ago).
3. The third occurred 1 week after that (1 week ago).
ï‚· Doc-Wagon have supplied last known locations for clients.
ï‚· Doc-Wagon have been unable to uncover any witnesses to the events leading up to or causing the signal losses.
ï‚· All three missing clients held Doc-Wagon Basic contracts upplied by their employer.
ï‚· All three worked for different employers.
ï‚· We have names and adresses of missing clients.
ï‚· We have been provided

Curren nodded with approval and comprehension at the screen.
'Now thats very helpful indeed!' He enthused as he strode up and down gauging his thoughts.
'We now have the base information to work on now.' he thought.

Are there maps provided with this document Arcanus/Black? Maps that give the information on the subjects last known location before the signals were lost? Where they live etc? I have a few ideas thats all. This includes a requirement for maps of the undergroud sewerage systems of the target areas.
What knowledge do I have on the astral locale of where these abductions were supposed to have occurred (Without me having to project)? I may have answered my own question here but its worth a try.

Edritch Fire burned in the virtua air before the mechanical skeleton, as Necron keyed in his false code.
Its metallic form shuddered as the monolith resisted the intrusion, Necron felt a burning intrusion into its core, a snarl escaped its skeletal jaw.The robot knight turned its unwelcome gaze, scrutinizing the visitor, almost eager to unleash its code power upon a potential intruder.GM wrote:Logic+Shields Roll.GM wrote:Logic+Chameleon (Disguise. etc??)
A virtua map flashed up on the paper thin screen, showing the Google Terra Map with the locations overlaid.Curren wrote:Are there maps provided with this document Arcanus/Black? Necrons servant sprite acknowledged Angel and informed him that the sewer maps were restricted to secure civic engineering LTGs.

Ok. In astral terms, how fast is my ascelerity? And how easy would it be for someone/thing to be able to perceive and identify me in astral space due to my increased speed? Also do I still have the give away trail that supposedly leads back to my body?
Also I would have looked into any rumours/accounts of magical activity in the Oaklands area; to ascertain how many magically awakened beings/people have been documented. The web, newspapers etc.
Also, how difficult would it be for me to be able to change my astral echoes to appear like some other entity? Not Masking.

Accelerity is governed by your Metaskill success with a maximum increase of your GOI, so currently Curren can boost his astral speed to a maximum of 12000 mph, his threshold would be 9 to achieve this, with a Drain Code of 5+Rounds Sustained.Curren wrote:Ok. Baring a spell it can only be done via Masking, however mana based Illusions work upon the Astral Plane. Also, how difficult would it be for me to be able to change my astral echoes to appear like some other entity? Not Masking.

As day turned into night and the light faded, Black listened in to the feed from the bug he'd placed in Eddie's apartment. The trideo was on, still, keeping the morose man company, but otherwise the place was quiet, with only the occasional forlorn meow from Miranda's cat.
"I know, buddy, I know," was the typical response from the grieving man.
Deep within Black's soul a mote of pity stirred. It was still not an emotion the elf was comfortable with. It had the effect of messing with your mind, distracting you from the task at hand.
Dismissing it as irrelevant, and not wishing to give the emotion any more to feed on, he severed the remote link with the transmitter.
Angel was busy talking with some woman called Karen on his phone, whilst Drake was sitting half watching some inane sit-com and at the same time manipulating all the spare metal he could get his hands on in the apartment into a swirling ball that floated a half metre above the coffee table. A makeshift effigy of the thing the small man called his god.
"It's all here," Drake said defensively to Black's accusing stare. "I'll put it all back!"
Black said nothing, but the look shouted 'you'd better!'.
"I'm going for a ride," Black stated in his indistinguishable accent. "Be back later."
Cardinal/Sinner/Black had been in the America's for just over three years now. Although he had been conditioned to speak with both Scottish and 'BBC Cambridge' accents by His Transys creators, he had quickly discerned that both would make him stand out in this country. Although the Scottish lilt was often mistaken by uneducated 'Americans' for Irish, it still placed him. And the posh English accent was even worse.
Black had listened to his fellow compatriots and residents and had made a conscious effort to change his accent. Now a listener would struggle to place him at all, there was a hint of California, a touch of the mid-west and a dash of European. All the better to make him just one more nobody out there on the streets.
Drake shrugged, "Okay!" as Black closed the door behind him.
The elf jumped on his bike and rode through the lamp lit streets, back to the bus stop where Miranda had disappeared.
Although he'd checked for cameras earlier, that had been purely an eyeball check. Now, with the fall of darkness, the cameras would have switched to night vision.
Although most security cameras these days recorded in both low-light and thermal spectrums the whole purpose of them was to help identify any perpetrators of crimes. Still, after all these years, infra-red light was a bloody good way of lighting up a dark area at night. To a low light camera it meant that the difference between a greyscale grainy image to one that looked as though it were taken in the height of day.
Sitting on his bike beside the bus stop, ignoring the two kids inside who were doing their best to chew each other's face off, he switched his visor's sensors to scan for infra-red and swept the area. It was a long shot but what else did they have at the moment. There were a few shops here - it was probable that they had security cameras. Black just hoped to find one that could offer them a glimpse of the 'abduction', if that were what happened.
His scan complete, he moved off to the site of the second disappearance and repeated the procedure, then again at the third site.
It was nearly time to make contact with someone directly involved with this job, which meant that it was time to get those two reprobates out of his apartment and down to his Op-Centre.

At any of the sites does Black identify any potential camera coverage?
Also - did he spot any of those delightful little cherubs that hang around on the streets at night?

Ok, one thing we didn't (At least I think we didn't) bring up at the meet:
Are there any more ork females that are at the same stage of their pregnancy in the Oakland area that Docwagon told us about?
If so, we need to make contact with all of them in some way asap.
If Docwagon didn't tell us, we need to find out from them.

Don't panic!!
We did indeed ask the question and they have forwarded us a list of their customers who are potential targets.
All well and good but we don't have the resources to watch them all so we'll have to be picky with our choices.
That's the reason Black has been concentrating on the previous victims - hard facts as opposed to fingers in the air!!

Yes, I know that. But I was just asking if we had a list. Now I know we have one!
The way I look at it we can investigate and find out some important facts about the previous abductions. However no matter how much information we glean from the previous crimes I'm very certain there will be very little information to help us out catching the perpertrators on one of their future kidnap attempts.
So the question is: Can I see the list of potential women who could be targeted for abduction due to their pregnancies? You can continue with the facts and I can look at the possibilities! We will then combine the two and it will whittle down to some semblance of a solution.
If we spread the work out, we can get a bit more done!
Stop hogging the information!

So we've got a list of pregnant orc women in the Oakland area?
If only we knew which one was most likely to be targetted next, we could lay a trap. We could replace the pregnant orc with a non-pregnant orc, wearing a prosthetic bump. And in the prosthetic bump we could hide a person...
If only we knew a small person who would be no bigger than an orc baby and who could hide in a prosthetic orc womb...
