The London Docks - Etheria I
“Discharge ballast to one tenth, open veins” barked Mr Gecko
The wooden wharf running along the Witches starboard shuddered as vast quantities of water, holding the craft in the Thames was pumped out at pressure.
As the fluid cleared the tanks, the ship began to creak, propellers housed within great metal cylinders rotated to a vertical position and fired up, the ships hull lined with Martian Liftwood allowed her to lift free of the turbulent river and into the air.

Sebastian Reynolds naturally countered the rocking as the Witch laboured into low altitude, Captain Paige Holt watched as South London sank away beneath them.
Lilly steered the ship out and into open sky, the Witch continued to creak and labour.

“Heading Captain” requested Lilly, Paige turned and looked at Reynolds eyebrows raised
“Oh, me” he said realising the bridge was now waiting for him “The town of Crickley in Kent and as quick as we’re able!” he finished cheerfully, although the hint of command was unrecognizable.

Gecko was already at the charts and quickly relayed coordinates to Lilly, the Witch swung out, “Take her up to better air” Paige ordered, the screws started to push the ship up, ballast water continuing to jettison, the ship lurched, hit a spell of turbulence and then after several minutes seemed to settle.

“A bit bumpier than I remember” remarked Reynolds as the Witch settled into routine
Paige or Captain Holt as she was now known, thought on this a moment before replying “Ether Flyers are poor at low altitude, ethers very thin closer to the ground, only the Martian Liftwood keeps her airborne, we have to ascend until the ether thickens and the panes can take hold”
“Didn’t seem so bad in Canada” he replied watching the first rays of sunlight break over the horizon
“Some places have more low altitude ether than others, London and most of Europe are notoriously bad, which reminds me we’ll struggle to get close to the Earth near your village”
“Sounds very much like you need some better engines at low altitude” he responded thoughtfully
Paige looked at the Witch’s owner with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion “You have such a thing in mind”
“No but I know someone who could” he turned only to realize that Otto wasn't with them, ‘Of course he fainted’ Reynold’s mentally chided himself, before returning to the view and his thoughts.

Meadow Croft Farm, Crickley, Kent – Etheria I
The battle in the farmyard was surprisingly evenly matched, the crazed Raz was holding his own against the monstrous Martian Wyvern by bellowing at it, a few times this seemed to have failed and the beast had knocked him down.
However Raz had managed to avoid its bite but not its tail.

Lieutenant Tiley was struggling to keep the farmer safely in the barn, the stupid old man wanted to either get back to his house or try and kill the beast, despite the fact it would clearly tear him apart.

Fortunately his female charge possessed more sense and hid further back in the barn, it still wasn't evident whether the lunatic would win his strange battle with the beast and Tiley wasn't convinced his service pistol would stop it.

The Eastward Roads from London to Kent – Etheria I
Tens of miles away from the farm a trio of steam carriages hurtled through the night, a larger man suddenly cursed "Damn and blast"!
"What is it?" replied a slighter but menacing man sat beside him, the broader man put down his telescope, "The lanterns out, we've lost her!"

“I suppose it was inevitable when relying upon such a ridiculous means of tracking her! The thin man snarled
“Of course you had a better method!” retorted Archer, the thin man had already cranked a handling to a small but ornate box and lifted its mouthpiece
“Regretfully I can report we have lost the trail!”

The Southern Fields Meadow Croft Farm, Crickley, Kent – Etheria I
The vacuum balloon came into a bumpy landing across the newly ploughed fields.
Its occupants a generally primitive group of creatures transplanted to Victorian England and very fearfully of flying, their female leader stumbled from the craft, she knew that time was short.
The warriors they’d encountered in a few skirmishes had managed to rescue their escapee, they were significantly more formidable than the Normals they usually encountered and were proving a great hindrance.

Power flared in within her senses again, it was the first time she’d ever experienced this before and definitely never on Etheria, there was no power here it was devoid of magic.
A pulse of power again lit up in her head, a dull ache within her temples.

The brutish creatures looked at her, angrily she gestured in the direction of the pulse, they didn’t need telling twice and surged forwards on legs a rugby player would be proud of.

The Eastward Roads from London to Kent – Etheria I
In all his 61 years Ian Shelly had never seen the roads so busy at night, as yet anther steam carriage thundered past, its mechanics screaming at being pushed far beyond their manufacture.

He pulled himself out of the hedge grumbled and waved his walking stick, it was a good job he’d previously knocked back four or five double scotches before venturing home from The Bull and the Ram.

Samuel Brocklesbury doffed his hat in apology as he cracked the levers, his eyes narrowed as he saw several steamwagons blocking the road ahead, he wasn’t one to trust coincidence.
“Miss Garrett!” he murmured
The feisty journalist was looking ahead, her face drenched in sweat
“We need to go around them!” she breathed
Sam jerked the left lever forwards, pitching the wagon into a sharp right turn which very nearly rolled the carriage
Sam had spotted a dirt track, its entrance hidden by overgrown hedgerow, half of which destroyed by the carriages passage.
“I can hear him”
“Miss” he replied a hint of worry creeping into his voice
“A song of battle” she breathed

Meadow Croft Farm, Crickley, Kent – Etheria I
“WHATS E BLOODY DOIN” bellowed the farmer, who Tiley was beginning to suspect had both a death wish and the potential to have a heart attack.
However Tiley was inclined to agree if Raz didn't slay the Wyvern it would take a chunk out of him, he barely noticed the implosion of wood beside the farmers head over the bestial roar.

Quickly popping his head out he spied a number of figures quickly advancing through the fields “Damn” he cursed
“YOU” he barked, the farmer stopping his tirade and looking shocked by the command
“We have a number of murderers approaching us now, they mean to kill her” pointing at Nirie “You need to barricade the barn doors and get into cover”
Momentarily the old farmer looked ready to protest but Tiley’s glare prodded him into action, as he swung the great wooden doors shut, the aircorps officer scrambled up into the hayloft.

Positioning himself in the darkness of the bale hatch he took aim with his revolver, dearly wishing he had a rifle.

The slim man grimaced at the response he received via the radio.
“Needless to say he is extremely displeased!” he said, however Archer’s attention was elsewhere, the explorer and game hunter was stood along the road listening.

“What is it” the slim man snapped impatiently, the two Special Branch detectives both looked on stoically
Archer turned and jogged back to the steam carriage “Gunfire, to our North East”

The detective driving cranked the carriage forwards and the three wagons hurtled off towards the commotion.

Etheria I 1891 - Reynolds Lands - Epping Forest
Artemis Pitts surveyed the front gardens, the gardeners had achieved a miraculous job in rebuilding indeed resurrecting the flower beds and borders, he would keep an keen eye upon that Von Weirdigan character.

Upon the edge of his hearing he picked up a faint drone, looking around at the house he saw nothing.

He turned back and was struck by a wall of air, this lifted him off his feet and threw him onto the lawn, oblivious to his discomfort the horror he felt was looking upon the flower beds which had been completely flattened.

Looking up his eyes widened as he looked at what was essentially a ship floating hundreds of feet above him, a great thrumming noise emitting from it, rattling the houses windows.

Mr Pitts stood, brushed himself down and stared balefully at the craft, as it sluggishly lowered itself down to barely a 50 feet above the grounds, at which point a large basket swung out upon a crane and descended.

As the basket settled up the ground he stopped himself from giving the occupants a piece of his mind, stood at the front was the Lord of the Manor - Lord Reynolds.

Her Majesties Space Station - The Heleos
Lagrange Point 1 - Etheria I

The Heleos station was a large affair consisting of a series of discs joined into a horizontal upper deck, attached to this was a convoluted system of transit and steam pipes, glass houses, towers and brass spheres.
Major Vincent Jarman stood within an observation bubble watching meteorites tumble above the deck, a field of vented ether pushed the rocks away from the decks ensuring the stations safety.

His attention turned to yet another ether yacht following the currents through the void, sunlight eclipsing its hull, making it almost painful to look upon.
“How many is that sergeant major?” he asked
Stood a respectful distance behind the officer in the austere black dress uniform of the Royal Etheric Guardsmen was sergeant major Larker “That would be Seven sar”
“The most priceless jewel of our age and we surround it with wastrels!” he muttered

Her Majesty’s space regiment had been deployed to ensure the jewels security, inwardly Jarman considered the assignment a waste of time, however the regiments honor was at stake.
“Ensure the guard details are raised to full compliment and that the corporal fully vets any visitors!”
“Sar” barked Larker who disappeared at a swift march

Prelude: Lord Reynolds Lands - Above Epping Forest
(21:11:58)The trees rustled with the downdraft of the colossal vessel floating impossibly above the estate. The boarding baskets completed their elevation into the holds, Annette insisted upon being shown her quarters, as Sam ensured that Lord Reynold's travelling provisions were placed in his stateroom.
(21:14:20) (Reynolds): Sighs as he looks up from reading a two day old copy of The Guardian. He folds the paper carefully, tucking it under his arm then rubs at his eyes wearily. Stepping from the basket onto the steel deck with a slight echo he feels a sudden rush of excitement.
(21:16:58) arcanus: Otto had been in a curious state, seeming to drift to and from wakefulness constantly, Raz for his part seems very excited, although pausing to listen to sounds unheard of by anyone else
(21:18:35) (Reynolds): Is anyone of the crew around?
(21:20:15) arcanus: It occurs to Reynolds that despite all of his adventures he's never been into space before, yes in the hold several members of crew are busying around, strapping everything down
(21:23:06) (Reynolds): Reynolds approaches one of the crewmen and coughs lightly to get his attention.
(21:24:45) arcanus: "What do yer w... Oh I'm sorry sir" The crewman straightens
(21:25:50) (Reynolds): Keeps his face passive. "do you know where one might find the captain?"
(21:27:07) arcanus: He then stumbles slightly as the etheric engines strain in the lower atmosphere sending vibrations throughout its superstructure
(21:27:31) arcanus: "I think she'll be on the bridge sir" he says regaining his balance
(21:28:35) (Reynolds): Nods in thanks and without further comment heads up to the bridge.
(21:32:28) arcanus: Captain Holt frowns looking at the ethermeters, the level of ether low above the forest, "We're all aboard" captain reports the hold steward
(21:34:59) (Reynolds): Reynolds steps lightly over the threshold into the bridge but remains silent and discreet at the back so that he can observe the workings of his senior crew. As he watches the captain go about her business he frowns noticing that his hands have gone clammy.
(21:36:40) arcanus: "Thank god" she grumbles, "Take her up Miss Buxton" she orders, at the helms womans control, with practiced skill she resets a series of brass switches and levers, such small changes effecting massive movement with the etheric mechanics within the hull.
(21:39:54) (Reynolds): Reynolds stands with his arms folded, nonchalantly ignoring the sway of the vessel as she labours skyward. Still he remains silent, tension building as he crossed to a window and peers up towards the heavens.
(21:41:33) arcanus: Engineering frantically work to realign the cells and engage massive turbines, the bow of the Witch tilts upward as the scant free ether swirling around within the surrounding air is drawn through the cells, as the vessel ascends Reynolds can see midnight blue on the edge of the heavens.
(21:42:36) arcanus: The Witch's climb feels like a person short of air struggling to the surface of the water
(21:45:05) (Reynolds): Reynolds moves over to stand just behind the captain, granting himself almsot the best view of the goings on.
(21:50:54) arcanus: From his vantage point he can see the bridge crew working frantically, Holt watches her attention shifting between the crew and her meters and gauges
(21:53:57) (Reynolds): "Everything going smoothly, Captain Holt?" Reynolds asks quietly. He is taking everything in, hoping to be able to offer a similarly confident authority should ever the need arise.
(21:56:24) arcanus: Everybody tenses as the Witch shudders again, this time violently, rains lashes the forward view ports
(21:56:30) arcanus: (Roll 3D6)
(21:56:53) ChatBot: (Reynolds) rolls 3d6 and gets 1,6,3.
(21:56:59) (Reynolds): 10
(21:59:08) arcanus: "She's a big ship, she's always a pain to get spaceside" she whispers, not taking her eyes off the bridge

High Earth Altitude
Captain Holt’s attention didn't waver nor turn to Lord Reynold’s.
"Everything going smoothly, Captain Holt?" Reynolds asks quietly.
Everybody tensed as the Witch shuddered again, this time violently, rains lashed the forward view ports as she rose through the cloud layer
"She's a big ship, she's always a pain to get spaceside" Holt whispered, not taking her eyes off the bridge “Smaller Flyers can climb with thin Ether, this ones a greedy bitch needs a full lung full to get her up”
Again Reynold’s could sense the tension around the bridge, almost as if they expected the ship to suddenly fall from the sky, he remained motionless as the bow of the Ether Flyer began to aggressively bounce, his Lordship noticed the gauges in front of Paige appeared to be dropping.

The ship felt as if it were losing speed “JETS” shouted Captain Holt, from his vantage point below decks Raz heard the sound of rushing air and metal moving, he saw the sound of great plumes of gas or air tear upwards from the side tanks.
The ether within the plumes extending upwards and barely caressing the thicker ether above, like some enormous lazy cat the cloud of ether above stretched out and reached down the jet.

The Witch jolted and suddenly accelerated as if caught upon a fishing line and being reeled in, Reynold’s noticed that Paige and the bridge crew relaxed and began to chat among themselves as the ship now confidently rose into the darkness and towards the void.
