The tethers and orbiting spheres become visible, as another layer of understanding is revealed they see that the tethers are anchored within some slot like recesses upon the lock face.

Recesses in a similar fashion to those that a control stick within a vehicle would live in, the recesses form a geometric grid within organised squares upon the face.

So I take it what you're saying is that the spheres fit into the geometric grid like cogs that if fitted in correctly will operate the mechanism?

Or are the spheres the ends of levers, and if we move the spheres into the correct position the machine will work?

Righto, so these levers could control the machine. But we have no idea which lever does what, and don't think we should randomly plough ahead willy-nilly.

So, is it possible for Drake to levitate and get a closer look at the slots?
He's looking for some kind of symbol at the top or bottom of the slot which might indicate which does which.

Or, have they seen a grid patter on this meta-quest which might show a formation to put the levers in?

Currens going to head down a different tack, and explains it to Frank.

'Mate, as I've experienced before, all physical and meta physical entities leave sam sort of trail behind 'em. and in the past I've used these 'trails' to locate them.' Curren put a finger to his lips as he began to pace and form his thoughts into words.

'Now in the classic espionage flicks; it was the spraying of a powder on the numeric keypad of a safe that would reveal the most recently used numbers and thus cut down on the probabilities for the combination.'

He clicked his fingers, as he had pinned down the idea.
The cockney turned to the gnome.

'I want your help to assense the last time that this 'portal' was opened, and to track down any residue of the users action on the combination!'

'That will give us the order in which thi thing will open!'

'Well, what do ya think?!' he nudged Frank with his elbow into what would be a humans ribs and only succeded in batting him in the ear.

'Ah, sorry mate. I forgot about that...'

'Ow!' he yelped and continued without a retort to the gnome; as if the idea would blow away like smoke if he didn't keep his hands on it.
'Well' Curren struggled to put his ability into words.

'You know that everythin' is governed by energy doncha? Well some energies are stronger that others. What we need to do is perceive a specific energy that resides still over the portal from the previous visitor.'

'You need to link your perceptions with me, and we'll attempt to strip away the background count of the energies which will ultimately leave us with the previous users combination path!'

'You getting this so far?' he enquired, barely beleiving it himself.
